Dr. Amadeus William Grabau (1870-1946), Professor of Geology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and expert on sedimentary geology. This photograph was published in "Scientific Monthly" when he was awarded the Mary Clark Thompson Medal for his contributions to paleontology and geology. Grabau was affiliated then with the National University of Peking, China.
