William Gates (1863-1940), amateur archaeologist whose research focused on Mayan and Aztec history. He founded the Maya Society in 1920 and was later affiliated with the Carnegie Institution of Washington and Tulane University. The photograph was used in a 1931 news story about his discoveries.
