The event was known as the Festival of American Folklife prior to 1998. Some materials were created by the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage's predecessor units, the Smithsonian Center for Folklife Programs and Cultural Studies, 1992-2000, and the Office of Folklife Programs, 1978-1992.
