Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Accession 15-134
Smithsonian Institution. Office of the Secretary
Administrative Records, 2006, 2012-2014
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records that document the collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Unites States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in developing programs and exhibitions related to innovation for the Arts and Industries Building (AIB). Closed to the public since 2004, the Arts and Industries Building was meant to be the home for the Smithsonian Innovation Space and was to open in the summer of 2014. Planning for the space began in 2013, but after a year of program planning and financial review, the Smithsonian concluded that the cost of rehabilitating the building for public use and operating it exceeded available funding sources at the time. These records document the planning process for the physical space, the development of educational programs and exhibitions, budget matters, and staffing. The records were maintained by Pherabe Kolb, Associate Director of Strategic Communications, Office of Communications and External Affairs, who worked under the auspices of the Office of the Secretary as the Project Director of the Smithsonian Innovation Space. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, proposals, floor plans, architectural drawings, budget records, surveys, presentations, video recordings, floor plans, and workshop records. Some materials are in electronic format.
