Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Accession 14-234
National Portrait Gallery (Smithsonian Institution). Office of External Affairs
Program Records, 2001-2006
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records that primarily document the Paul Peck Presidential Awards, with some additional materials documenting programs sponsored by the Paul Peck Fund for Presidential Studies. The fund was created in 2000 when Peck donated $2 million to enhance the National Portrait Gallery's presidential programs. Among the projects sponsored were panel discussions on topics related to the presidency, publication and educational materials, and town hall meetings with high school students affiliated with the Junior Statesman of America and the Close Up Foundation.
The Paul Peck Presidential Awards were founded in 2002 and celebrate achievement in support of the presidency. Two awards were given each year: an award for service to a president that honors members of the president's executive staff, members of the cabinet, or members of Congress; and an award for portrayal of a president is given to an individual who has depicted the presidency in either a visual or literary form.
These records document the recipients of the awards, the awards program and ceremony, as well as town hall meetings and panel discussions. Materials include correspondence, programs, brochures, invitations, transcripts, images, and speeches. Some materials are in electronic format.
