Summary

Smithsonian staff make a plaster mold of a blue whale, sometimes called a sulphur-bottom whale, on Hermitage Bay, Newfoundland. The whale model was exhibited at the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904 before it was moved into the South Hall in the Arts and Industries Building. In 1910 the 78-foot mold found a new home in the US National Museum (today the National Museum of Natural History) and was replaced in 1960 by a new model.
