left to right: Gregory Breit (1899-1981), Professor of Physics, University of Wisconsin; Nobel laureate and physicist Enrico Fermi (1901-1954); and George Gamow (1904-1908), Professor of Physics, George Washington University. Fermi had immigrated to the United States on January 2, 1939, and had accepted an appointment at Columbia University. The physicists were attending the Fifth Washington Conference on Theoretical Physics, Washington, D.C., January 26 to 28, 1939, and were reading a journal article by Otto Hahn.
