Dear Sir
I have long contemplated asking the favour of you, or some other influential friend, to propose me as a candidate for the honour of admission, as a corresponding member of the Columbian Institute; and as I now meditate a visit to the Brazils the motives which have induced this wish are greatly increased.
Having understood that there will be a meeting of the members of the Institute this evening I have imparted my wishes to Doctor Cutbush and Mr Elliott, and apprised them of my being a member of the Lyceum of Natural History of New York. Both those gentlemen assured me of their friendly disposition. If to their support you will be so good as to lend me your aid and obliging offices in the attainment of an object which will I trust be reciprocally beneficial it will add to my grateful sense.
of obligation for the courtesy which you have hitherto extended to me.
I am, Sir, very respectfully
Your most obd[[superscript]] t [[/superscript]] Hble,, Servt,,
