I have rec[[superscript]] d [[/superscript]] your letter of the 7[[superscript]] th [[/superscript]]. instant informing me that I have been elected a resident member of the Columbian Institute for the promotion of arts and sciences.
I accept the honor with gratitude, while I fear that I shall not be able to justify the partiality which has conferred it upon me.
