Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Accession 13-079
Smithsonian Institution. Office of Exhibits Central
Exhibition Records, circa 1988-2012
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records documenting the development of exhibitions for the Arts and Industries Building, the Smithsonian Institution Building, and the International Gallery. The Arts and Industries Building, Office of Exhibitions was formed when Ellen Dorn was appointed as Director of Exhibitions for the Arts and Industries Building in November 1998. Betsy Burstein Robinson joined the office in 1999 and Seth Waite in 2001. The Arts and Industries Building closed to the public in 2004 and, in late 2005, the staff was transferred under the Office of Exhibits Central as the Special Exhibitions Division where they continued to develop and manage exhibitions in both public and office spaces in the Smithsonian Institution Building (otherwise known as the Castle) as well as in the International Gallery.
Materials include correspondence, memoranda, agreements, checklists, exhibition drawings, floor plans, scripts, object lists, budgets, reports, publicity materials, press releases, exhibition catalogs, images, clippings, books, videos, audiotapes, brochures, pamphlets, and related materials. Some materials are in electronic format.
Materials dated prior to 1998 were created by Dorn while she was project manager for the traveling exhibition, America's Smithsonian, or by Anne R. Gassett, Associate Director, International Gallery.
