Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Accession 13-025
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute
Research Records, 1981-1983
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records documenting the 1982 census of the Barro Colorado Island forest dynamics plot. The 50 hectare plot was established in Panama in 1980 by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and Princeton University. The first full census was completed in 1982, revealing a total of approximately 240,000 stems of 303 species of trees and shrubs more than one centimeter in diameter at breast height. The long-term tree census techniques established in this plot became the basis of a global network of census plots that would later be coordinated by the Center for Tropical Forest Science. Materials include hand-drawn maps showing trees as well as fallen logs, outcrops of rock, water features, and lianas. Materials also include correspondence and notes related to corrections and some data coding forms that were filed with the maps. These materials were maintained by research ecologist Stephen P. Hubbell.
