Early passenger locomotive, the "Pioneer," build in 1851 for the Cumberland Valley Railroad Company of central Pennsylvania. It regularly pulled three-and four-car passenger trains and continued in use until 1901. This photograph shows curator John H. White and secretary Mary S. Chroniger checking the final installation of the "Pioneer" in the Railroad Hall of the Smithsonian Institution's new Museum of History and Technology.
