Summary

This collection consists of the field books of Albert Spear Hitchcock from his botanical collecting activities between 1905 and 1918. The collection consists of 35 bound field books and two folders of loose notes. Hitchcock collected grasses and other botanical specimens in Central America, the West Indies, parts of Asia and Africa, and throughout the United States and Canada. Locations include: Ecuador, British Guiana, Peru, Mexico, Philippines, China, Japan, Haiti, Bolivia, South Africa, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, and Canada. Hitchcock's field notes generally consist of specimen lists that document specimens collected in the field. The lists tend to be brief and include collector numbers, date, location, and scientific name. Sometimes the specimen list includes notes on collection, locality, abundance, and physical observations. Many of the field notes have been annotated with identifications.
