Summary:

In January 2008, the Board of Regents adopted a new Smithsonian-wide Statement of Values and Code of Ethics which called for the establishment of an internal Ethics Advisory Board (EAB). Acting Secretary Cristia n Samper appointed the members of the board in June 2008. Its mandate is to disseminate the Statement of Values and Code of Ethics by initiating discussions throughout the Smithsonian Institution (SI), to examine existing SI policies and directives in relation to the Statement of Values and Code of Ethics to determine if they are current and adequate, and to examine and interpret policies and guidelines in other professional organizations to learn if there need to be any revisions to the current Statement of Values and Code of Ethics that should be recommended to the Secretary and the Board of Regents. James B. Gardner, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs, Office of Curatorial Affairs and later Senior Scholar, Office of the Director, National Museum of American History served as the chair from 2008-2011. This accession consists of records that document the formation, organization, responsibilities, actions, and recommendations of the EAB. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, meeting agendas, and notes.
