Summary

Judge John T. Raulston moved the trial proceedings outdoors to a temporary platform erected near the Rhea County Courthouse due to the stifling heat in the courtroom. Defense attorney Clarence Darrow (standing at right) continues his interrogation of the chief prosecution lawyer, William Jennings Bryan (seated to the left), with the crowd of observers remaining silent. Defense lawyers for John Thomas Scopes, John R. Neal, Arthur Garfield Hays, and Dudley Field Malone, can be seen sitting to the right. Behind the court reporters at the table, in the left front, is the defendant, John Thomas Scopes.
