Summary

Just after President Theodore Roosevelt's second term ended in March 1909, the eminent big-game hunter set sail for British East Africa, serving as the commander of an expedition to obtain specimens for the Smithsonian Institution. In this image the team's photographers captured Roosevelt with a dead bull elephant, further enhancing the outdoorsman's already rugged image. The expedition's specimens were put on display in the Smithsonian's new museum of natural history the following year.
