Jacob Goodale Lipman (1874-1939) was Professor and Dean of Agriculture and the Director of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) at Rutgers University. An internationally known expert on soil science, Lipman had been born in Friedrichstadt, Russia, and educated in the United States. Soon after receiving his Ph.D. from Cornell University, he became a Rutgers professor and the NJAES director. This photograph was taken at the First International Congress of Soil Science, June 1927, Washington, D.C., for which Lipman served as president.
