Helen Elizabeth Walsh (1906-1997)

Summary

In October 1948, Helen Elizabeth Walsh (1906-1997) was president-elect of the American Dietetic Association, and was to take office at the 31st annual convention in Boston, Massachusetts. Walsh served as chief of the bureau of nutrition for the California Department of Public Health, 1947-1971, advising state and local health departments on maternal, child and adult health, geriatrics, handicapped childrens services, dental health, health education, sanitation and tuberculosis control. As a lecturer at the University of California School of Public Health, she helped establish the school's public health nutrition program. She was a founder and president of the Society for Nutrition Education, and served on the National Academy of Sciences' Food and Nutrition Board. A native of Des Moines, she had been educated at Iowa State University and Columbia University.
