left to right: Gladys McLaughlin Schramm Keener (ca. 1897-1961) and Elvin Charles Stakman (1885-1979) in 1949. Stakman was then serving as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Keener was Executive Editor of Scientific Monthly. She later became Executive Editor of Science, 1950-1953. In 1953, Keener and scientist Howard A. Meyerhoff, chairman of the editorial board, became involved in a political dispute with the current AAAS president (Edward U. Condon) and president-elect (Warren Weaver) over editorial policy at Science and Scientific Monthly, and they both resigned (see "Two Editors Quit Top Science Group," New York Times, May 27, 1953). Kenner joined the Scientific Manpower Council and later became a partner in a minerals consulting firm.
