Summary

Irish-born chemist Kathleen Yardley Lonsdale (1903-1971) was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1956 for her work in x-ray crystallography; in 1968, she became the first woman elected as President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS). The caption to this photograph taken by F.C. Livingstone said that "Dame Lonsdale was the wee grandmother who is the new president of the BAAS.
