Frederick Amasa Coller (1887-1964) was in the Department of Surgery, University of Michigan Medical School; Case Western Reserve professor Claude Schaeffer Beck (1894-1971) had performed the first defibrillation; and Cassius James Van Slyke (b. 1900) worked for the U.S. Public Health Service and had become director of the National Heart Institute in 1948; they were attending the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Heart Symposium at the Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C., January 21, 1950.
