Summary

A marine biologist by training, Jesse Walter Fewkes (1850-1930) initially worked on invertebrates at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard. In 1895, after working in the American Southwest, he became interested in ethnology and began working for U.S. Bureau of Ethnology, serving as its chief in 1918.
