This research group at the U.S. National Bureau of Standards (NBS) headed by Ferdinand Graft Brickwedde (1903-1989) was the first to liquefy helium gas. Ferdinand Graft Brickwedde (1903-1989), who was co-discoverer of deuterium (with Harold C. Urey and George M. Murphy), worked at U.S. National Bureau of Standards from 1920s until 1956, when he became professor of physics and Dean at Pennsylvania State University. Physicist Russell Burton Scott (1902-1967) worked on cryogenics at NBS, 1928-1965.
