During the 1930s, when this photograph was taken, Eleanor Plunkette Brown was National Secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Blindness; by 1944, now married, Eleanor Brown Merrill was the Society's Executive Director and had been elected the first woman president of the National Health Council.
