Summary

Austrian-born physicist Herta R. Leng (1903-1997) fled Austria in 1939 and eventually immigrated to the United States in 1940. This photograph was taken when she was awarded an American Association of University Women International Fellowship. With that fellowship support, she continued her research on radioactivity at Purdue University and later joined the faculty at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), where she taught until 1968. Every year, RPI honors Leng with the Herta Leng Memorial Lecture series.
