Summary

Consists of records documenting the management of private funds of the Smithsonian Institution. These funds are derived from non-federal sources such as the original bequest of James Smithson and numerous other bequests and gifts from other benefactors. Private funds are managed separately from congressional appropriations, although both funds may at times support the same activities. Materials include daybooks, ledgers, receipts, journals, registers, statements, and other financial records documenting the management of the private funds of the Smithsonian Institution.
