The bulk of these records document a particularly active period of high-profile animal deaths and investigations by several regulatory bodies and news agencies during the tenure of Lucy H. Spelman, Director, 2000-2004. Materials include clippings, interview transcripts, press release drafts, letters of complaint received from the public, notes, background information on animals, and memoranda and email among zoo staff and between zoo staff and Smithsonian Institution, Office of Public Affairs staff.
