Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Accession 07-207
National Museum of Natural History. Office of Education
Grant Records, circa 1999-2002
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records documenting the family science backpack program funded by the Texaco Foundation. The backpacks were primarily distributed in schools for use at home and included fact sheets and other background information as well as instructions and materials for hands-on activities. All activities encouraged participation from other family members. Four distinct curriculums were developed: "Senses" for pre-kindergartners, "Rocks" for kindergartners, "Dirt" for first-graders; and "Water" for second-graders. Materials include grant proposal, status reports, backpack materials, early versions of the backpacks, illustrations, graphics, correspondence, memoranda, budgets, electronic records, DAT tapes, evaluations, and materials from meetings with teachers and principals. Some materials are in Spanish and some materials are in electronic format.
