Summary: | This accession consists of the records of Cynthia Adams Hoover, Curator Emeritus at the National Museum of American History (NMAH), and document her curatorial activities, professional interests, and publications over the years as Assistant Curator of Musical Instruments, 1961-1963; Associate Curator, 1964-1974; and Curator, 1975-2004. During her tenure Hoover was curator in the Section of Music Instruments, which became a division in 1966 and was renamed the Division of Musical History in 1987. In 1995, NMAH reorganized and the Division of Musical History became part of the Division of Cultural History, which was renamed the Division of Music, Sports, and Entertainment in 2004. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, and notes; meeting agendas and minutes; budget summaries; fundraising, awards, and grant information; biographical information; reports; workshop information; professional activities files pertaining to organizations in which Hoover was a founding member, such as the Society for American Music (formerly the Sonneck Society) and the American Musical Instrument Society; collection surveys; acquisition information; lecture papers; research and exhibition proposals; special event schedules and news releases; music history publications; audio cassettes; phonographs; black-and-white photographs; color photographs; floor plans; brochures; and VHS tapes. |

This accession consists of the records of Cynthia Adams Hoover (CAH), Curator Emeritus at the National Museum of American History (NMAH), and document her curatorial activities, professional interests, and publications over the years as Assistant Curator of Musical Instruments, 1961-1963; Associate Curator, 1964-1974; and Curator, 1975-2004. During her tenure Hoover was curator in the Section of Music Instruments, which became a division in 1966 and was renamed the Division of Musical History in 1987. In 1995, NMAH reorganized and the Division of Musical History became part of the Division of Cultural History, which was renamed the Division of Music, Sports, and Entertainment in 2004. Phonograph Records - 33 1/3 rpm records (Recordings where Cynthia Adams Hoover was involved in the production):
Songs by Stephen Foster, 1972, Nonesuch Records. Code number H71268. This recording was used by Smithsonian Instruments. Cynthia Adams Hoover made initial contact with Nonesuch Records and served as collaborator and contributor of material for record notes. This record won a Stereo Review award for Record of the Year.
19th-Century American Ballroom Music, 1975. Nonesuch Records. Code number H71313. This is the 1974 Smithsonian performance of this repertoire for which Cynthia Adams Hoover did major research on original orchestrations for mid 19th century band notes. She wrote record notes and sang in the chorus. This record won a Stereo Review award for Record of the Year.
Music of the Federal Era, 1978. New World Records. Code NW 299. Cynthia Adams Hoover wrote scholarly notes "The Instruments & Performance Practices." She served with Professor Richard Crawford as editor and organizer of repertoire and notes for this recording which was part of a U. S. Bicentennial project funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. Ms. Hoover also served on the New World Editorial Board.
