  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. • The Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO) is a global network of forest research sites and scientists dedicated to the study of tropical and temperate forest function and diversity. The multi-institutional network comprises 73 forest research sites across the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. ForestGEO monitors the growth and survival of approximately 6 million trees and nearly 13,000 species that occur in the forest research sites. ForestGEO also supports initiatives in the forest sites to monitor climate, carbon flux, vertebrates, insects, soil microorganisms, and more. Founded in 1990, ForestGEO was originally known as the Center for Tropical Forest Science until chaging its name in 2013. ForestGEO is coordinated by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Elizabeth Claire Losos served as Director, 1993-2005. She was succeeded by Mark Wishnie, Acting Director, 2005, and Stuart James Davies, Director, 2005- .
