This accession consists of records that document the activities of the former Office of the Assistant Secretary for Public Service, which was renamed the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Education and Public Service in 1992, and the Office of the Assistant Provost for Education and Cultural Programs in 1994. Materials include the correspondence and memoranda of Ralph Rinzler, Assistant Secretary for Public Service, 1984-1989; and James C. Early, Executive Assistant, 1986-1987, Deputy Assistant Secretary, 1988-1989, and Acting Assistant Secretary, 1990. Also included are proposals regarding projects such as "Afro-American Programming" and the "Kennedy Center Summer Project"; information about special events, "Smithsonian Year," Committee for a Wider Audience Development, and James Smithson Society; program reports; information regarding grant foundations and the public service budget; and minutes of meetings.
