Summary

These records document the exhibition, "Painting as a Pastime: The Paintings of Winston S. Churchill," which was shown in the Associates' Lounge of the Smithsonian Castle from September to November 1983. The exhibition was organized as part of "Britain Salutes New York 1983" by the Royal Oak Foundation, which was founded in 1975 to preserve Anglo-American cultural heritage. The exhibition was curated by Churchill's granddaughter Edwina Sandys, and was financed by Exxon Corporation. Its travel to the Institution was initiated by Richard Howland, Special Assistant to the Secretary and a trustee of the Royal Oak Foundation. These records were assembled by Barbara H. Russell in Howland's office, and she kept them when she moved to the International Center. The records contain memoranda and correspondence regarding budget, space, and scheduling for the exhibition; lists of objects and lenders; information on the development of loan agreements; condition reports for the objects; information on the exhibit checklist and labels; correspondence and invoices regarding object shipping and insurance; installation information including a floor plan blueprint; correspondence with sponsor groups; correspondence and memoranda regarding catalogue and poster production; publicity materials and press clippings; information on the organization of volunteer docents, special tours, and slide presentations; color slides of Churchill's life and artwork; memoranda and administrative forms regarding arrangements for events associated with the exhibition; lists of event participants and invitees; correspondence with participants; and photographs of the events.
