Descriptive Entry
The Secretary, with the approval of the Board of Regents, established the Smithsonian Council on January 27, 1966. The Council consists of twenty-five members selected by the Secretary for distinguished attainments in the learned disciplines and other fields. Its purpose is to advise the Secretary on programmatic endeavors and to provide guidance on the progress of research and public education within the Smithsonian Institution. Neil G. Kotler and Marc Pachter became Smithsonian Council Coordinators in 1991, succeeding James M. Young.
These records have been maintained by Young and Kotler, and document the activities of the Council from 1966 through 1995. The records include correspondence, memoranda, and biographical information regarding persons considered and selected for Council membership; logistical and budget information for Council meetings; correspondence, memoranda, and reports documenting the development of Council meeting agendas; meeting reports from the Council chair; and responses to the Council chair from the Secretary and Smithsonian staff.
