Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Smithsonian Institution. Assistant Provost for the Arts and Humanities
The position of Assistant Secretary for Museums was created in February 1986, then renamed the Assistant Secretary for Arts and Humanities in fiscal year 1992, and became the Assistant Provost for Arts and Humanities in October 1994. Tom L. Freudenheim has served in the position since its inception in 1986.
This accession consists of records that document the official functions and activities of the Assistant Provost for Arts and Humanities from 1982 to 1994, although the bulk of the records date from 1990 to 1993. They consist mostly of memoranda, correspondence, and reports generated both within and outside of the Smithsonian Institution which reflect the operations of bureaus and offices over which the Assistant Provost had oversight. The records also document Smithsonian-wide issues or initiatives that the Assistant Provost was involved with or had interest in. In addition, Freudenheim served as an ex officio board member of the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation, and his tenure is documented in these records by correspondence, meeting minutes, and reports.
