This accession consists primarily of unfiled correspondence and memoranda from the Curatorial Office of the National Museum of American Art (NMAA), and its predecessors. The material dates from 1977 through 1996, although the bulk of the material dates from 1980 through 1989. The correspondence includes public inquiries; offers by art dealers; letters of recommendation; grant reviews; and correspondence with art scholars and other museums. The records also contain memoranda between NMAA staff and Smithsonian management. Some of the records are administrative files, dating from 1982 through 1990. These include position descriptions for staff of the Renwick Gallery and NMAA; performance plans; personnel status reports; and forms and memoranda regarding NMAA hiring and personnel policies.
