Summary

These records document the work of John R. Kinard before and after the establishment of the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum in September 1967. Kinard became the Museum's Director in June 1967, a position he held until his death in 1989. The Museum's name changed to Anacostia Museum in April 1987. These records primarily document Kinard's involvement in community affairs and other activities, such as CTW?: Compared to What, Inc., The Bicentennial Commission of the District of Columbia, Inc., National Capital Community-Police Relations and Juvenile Delinquency Control project, and job and training program for the District of Columbia. In addition are records related to Kinard's official business of the Smithsonian Institution, such as Smithsonian announcements, Smithsonian Council, memoranda and correspondence to and from Secretary S. Dillon Ripley and other Smithsonian Institution administrators, as well as records concerning Kinard's travels. Also included is a poster titled "Focus on Jamaica," for an art exhibit by Richard Dempsey.
