Summary

Wilcomb E. Washburn pursued an active career as a scholar, the greater part of it as a curator and office head at the Smithsonian Institution. His work began with study of early American history, the history of exploration in North America, and Indian-White relations. His interests expanded into American studies, museums and cultural institutions, and multicultural approaches to historical study. His papers exhibit a lively interest in political, social, and cultural issues present in the wider culture during his career, both professional and cultural. Finally, there are some records here documenting Washburn's education and military service.
