  • The George Gustav Heye Center is a branch of the National Museum of the American Indian. Located in New York City, it was initially a private foundation but was incorporated into the larger National Museum of the American Indian, created by Congress in 1989. The Heye Center opened in 1994 and is dedicated to reaffirming and empowering the Native American voice through exhibitions and programs about Native American cultures throughout the Americas.
  • The director of the George Gustav Heye Center is responsible for all aspects of the Center's operations, including administration, membership, and ongoing consultations with the Native American community and reports to the Director, National Museum of the American Indian. John Haworth was appointed the Heye Center's director in 1994 and served until 2017. The director position has been vacant since 2018.
