Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Accession 01-171
Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. Office of the Director
Personal Files, 1985-1995
Descriptive Entry
These records document the interaction and relationship between Milo Cleveland Beach, Director (1987-2001), and prominent friends of the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. Records also document Beach's activities related to the negotiation for and acquisition of the Vever Japanese print collection.
Henri Vever's collection of Japanese prints represented a major addition to the Sackler collection of Japanese art, which, until that time, was very small. The acquisition demonstrated the breadth of Vever's Asian taste by supplementing the Sackler's Vever collection of Persian and Indian paintings, acquired in 1985 and featured in the exhibition, "A Jeweler's Eye: Islamic Arts of the Book from the Vever Collection."
See the series titled "Chronological Files" for outgoing correspondence. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, brochures and photographs.
