This accession consists of records created and maintained by Devra G. Kleiman documenting activities, programs, long-term planning, and administration of the Department of Zoological Research; relations with Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) and research centers around the world; and professional activities, especially involvement in the Animal Behavior Society (ABS), the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (AAZPA), now known as the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZAA), and the editorship of Wild Mammals in Captivity: Principles and Techniques. Devra G. Kleiman was a research scientist as well as Assistant Director for Animal Programs, 1983-1984; Assistant Director for Zoological Research and Educational Activities, 1984-1985; and Assistant Director for Research, 1985-1996.
Materials include correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, research and funding proposals, applications for committee nominations, committee reports, meeting minutes and agendas, notes, mailing lists, inventories of research projects, grant files, planning documents, presentation scripts, conference and meeting brochures and announcements, research progress reports, black and white photographs of animals, articles written by Kleiman, publication reviews, notices of research projects, questionnaires, staff listings, and panda studbooks.
