- The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Central Engineering Department is the primary source for state-of-the-art ground based and space borne scientific instrumentation development. The department is a full service engineering organization providing a broad range of highly sophisticated engineering capabilities regardless of project size or schedule. It also provides independent engineering design and analysis efforts and program management. R. Bruce Dias has served as manager of Central Engineering, 1982-2007. John Boczenowski was interim manager from 2008-2010, and was followed by James Shaw, who was manager from 2010-2020. Kari Haworth was appointed manager in 2021.
