  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • The Office of External Affairs and Development was created in 1999, an extension of the prior work of the National Museum of the American Indian National Campaign. Its director is responsible for the Museum's capital campaigns and oversight of the Museum's two advisory and fundraising boards, the George Gustav Heye Board of Directors, New York City, and the National Council, Washington, D.C. In addition the incumbent is responsible for the Museum's overall development efforts, public relations, marketing, membership, and related activities. It appears that the name of the office changed to the Office of External Affairs, then the Office of External Affairs and Communications, and now the Office of Marketing and Communications. The Office of Marketing and Communications manages communication planning, media relations, digital marketing, social media, brand mangement, and internal communications. The Development functions of the office appear to have been separated out around 2010. Margaret A. H. Bertin served as acting director, 1999, and was succeeded by Elizabeth Duggal, 2000-2007. Angela Leipold was appointed Assistant Director in 2007 and served until 2016. Bethany Bentley was appointed Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications in 2016.
