  • The Office of the Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer was created in 2004. The incumbent is responsible for the functions formerly carried out by the Office of the Under Secretary for American Museums and National Programs, as well as the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, the Office of Facilities Engineering and Operations, and the Office of the Chief Information Officer. The incumbent reports directly to the Secretary of the Institution. Shelia P. Burke served as the Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, from 2004 until 2007 when the office was abolished.
  • The office was restablished in 2019, when Meroë Park was appointed Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Office and began her tenure in January 2020. As Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, Park oversees most of the Smithsonian's day-to-day activities across its museums, research centers and education organizations, as well as many administrative and support functions. She also works with the Secretary to implement their vision, overseeing major strategic initiatives and programs.
