  • From its founding in 1974 the Hirshhorn's curators and support staff were organized, under the direction of a Chief Curator, as a unit called the Department of Painting and Sculpture. The Curatorial Department was formed from the Department of Painting and Sculpture in 1992. In 1997 the Curatorial and Education departments were joined into the Public Programs/Curatorial Department. In 1999 the Curatorial Department was restored to independent status. The Curatorial Department is responsible for the Museum's professional programs dealing with prints, painting, and sculpture, and other media in the Museum's collections. The Department reports to the Director of Art and Programs.
  • Neal David Benezra was Chief Curator, 1992-1996, and seems to have discharged those same functions while serving as Assistant Director for Art and Public Programs, 1997-1999. Judith Zilczer was Acting Chief Curator, Curatorial Department, January-September 2000, and was succeeded by Kerry Brougher as Chief Curator, October 2000. Brougher served until 2014. In 2015 Stéphane Aquin was named Chief Curator and served until 2020.
