• Richard Louie was made Assistant Director, Freer Gallery of Art in 1984. He was promoted again in 1989 to Associate Director and served in that position until his untimely death in 1990. See the history of the Executive Assistant to the Director for information about Louie's work before 1984. After 1990, the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery reorganized into joint management instead of sub-directors for each gallery. As the Assistant Director and the Associate Director, Freer Gallery of Art, Louie presided over financial, administrative, and other management activities of the Freer Gallery. The incumbent reported to the Office of the Director.
