- The International Catalogue of Scientific Literature was begun in 1901 in an effort to create a classified author and subject catalog of the world's current scientific literature. Countries that supported the effort created regional bureaus that collected the necessary information from their publications and forwarded it to a central bureau in London. The Smithsonian Institution was the regional bureau for the United States, initially paying for the work from its own funds and then from federal appropriations after 1906. Catalogs were published from 1901 to 1914. The organization continued to exist, but did not publish again after 1914. The Smithsonian closed its operations as the American bureau in 1933 for lack of funds.
- Cyrus Adler was Assistant Secretary in Charge through 1908. Leonard C. Gunnell served as Chief Assistant, Regional Bureaus, International Catalogue of Scientific Literature, 1908, and Assistant in Charge of the Regional Bureau for the United States, International Catalogue of Scientific Literature, 1909-1933.
