- The National Portrait Gallery Commission was authorized under the Act of Congress, April 27, 1962, establishing the National Portrait Gallery. The Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution was empowered to appoint such a Commission, determining its membership, tenure, and duties. The Commission was involved in planning many elements of the initial operation of the museum, such as recruiting a Director, developing rules and regulations for the Gallery, and reviewing the program of operation which the Director, when chosen, should propose. On an ongoing basis members of the Commission recommend accepting or declining items offered to the National Portrait Gallery collection. Its members also undertake, corporately and individually, to encourage gifts of funds, portraiture, statuary and other items which enable the National Portrait Gallery to commemorate the men and women who have made important contributions to the history and culture of the United States.
- The members of the Commission are drawn from prominent figures in the arts, literature, and other areas of American public life. The chairs of the Commission have included: John Nicholas Brown, 1962-1979; Senator Robert Morgan, 1980; Senator Barry M. Goldwater, 1981-1982; Senator Jake Garn, 1983-1988; Jeannine Smith Clark, 1989-1997; Barbara Novak, 1998-2003; Daniel Okrent, 2003-2007; Mallory Walker, 2008-2009; Jack H. Watson, 2009-2014; Steven K. Hamp, 2015-2017; Joseph P. Ujobai, 2017- .
