Agency History

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.
  • Annual meeting, Research Libraries Group,, 1999
  • The Electronic Smithsonian,, March 7, 2002
  • The office was created by Secretary Ira Michael Heyman in 1994 as part of his efforts to provide electronic access to the Smithsonian's collections from throughout the nation. Among the projects undertaken was the creation of a Smithsonian web page, which allowed the Smithsonian, among other things, to host a special site for information on its 150th anniversary celebration in 1996. Marc Pachter, the Counselor, reported to the Secretary. The office was closed when Pachter became Director, National Portrait Gallery, in 2000.
