- The National Air and Space Museum accumulated various pieces of art related to aviation, wartime events, and space flight. It had a Curator responsible for its art holdings in 1974, and apparently the Department of Art was created in 1976. It was responsible for collections management, operation of the Flights and Arts Gallery, and curating exhibitions. It reported to the Director. The Department was renamed the Department of Art and Culture in 1993 and abolished in 1996.
- James Dean was Curator, 1974-1980, and was succeeded as head by Mary S. Henderson, who served from 1980 to 1996.
