- This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

- In 1951 funds from the Alice Pike Barney Memorial Fund and a grant from the Department of State enabled the Smithsonian American Art Museum to establish the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). In 1965 SITES became an independent office. The office's aim is to share the Smithsonian's collections, research and exhibitions with audiences outside Washington, D.C., in the United States and around the world. To this end it sponsors exhibitions at local museums, libraries, science centers, historical societies, and schools.
- Annemarie Pope was the first Chief of the office, succeeded by Dorothy Van Arsdale, Acting Chief and Chief, 1964-1970; Dennis A. Gould, Chief, 1971-1973, and Director, 1974-1979; Peggy A. Loar, Director, 1981-1986; Eileen Rose (Acting), 1987-1988; and Anna R. Cohn, Director, 1988-2014; Myriam Springuel (Acting), 2014-2015, and Director, 2015- .
